Art Exhibits at Local Wineries will Add to the Celebrations this Weekend in Southern Illinois

May 4, 2009, Carbondale, Illinois – A feeling of inspiration will permeate the air this weekend with many celebrating Graduation and Mother’s Day. To add to the excitement, StarView Vineyards and Rustle Hill Winery will be featuring artists in outdoor exhibits this Saturday and Sunday, May 9-10. The art exhibits, presented by HeartlandArts.Net, will be starting by noon each day and running until at least 5pm, and admission is free. Both wineries are easily accessible down Route 51 from Carbondale (map). Musical acts include Larry Dillard & Blues Therapy at StarView, and Bruce Zimmerman Blues Duo, Ivas John Band, and Mixed Company at Rustle Hill.

The combination of being with family and friends in a spacious and picturesque outdoor atmosphere, sipping wine, and strolling through an art exhibit is a unique experience. Add to that the personal interaction with the artists, who aim to convey the passion they feel about their art, and the opportunity to take home a memento of the experience, and it’s a memory to cherish. A wide variety of artists will be on hand offering up an array of items and experiences.

Cheryl Owen, a resident of Ava, shows art in galleries on both sides of the Mississippi River. This past March, she was the Equestrian artist for the Illinois Horse Fair in Springfield. Horses have been an important subject matter in her art since age two and are still her passion. Her grandfather, an Iroquois Indian, gave her a first pony, and at age six she was given her first art lesson by her great aunt, an experienced and well known New England artist. In the past 20 years she has exhibited in many galleries and museums throughout the Midwest, won multiple awards and been commissioned by private collectors for equine portraits and genre murals.

Tom Horn, a southern Illinois coppersmith and art lover, fashions everything from giant sunbursts to wine racks to pendants with copper and fused glass. Each piece has its story, and he’s happy to share them, like the piece one man commissioned for the mother of his children, on which was included a secret engraving stating “Love You Forever.”

David Hammond is a professional photographer and resident of Goreville. His photography has been featured in shows, contests, and even in magazines such as Country, Birds and Bloom, and Outdoor Illinois.

Chad Goodpastor, resident of Carterville, has been creating glass-blown art for 13 years. He crafts amazing sculptures, oil bottles, pendants and more with his torch. His colorful wine bottle stoppers go perfectly with an open bottle of southern Illinois wine.

Brenda Cooley, a native southern Illinoisian and resident of Anna, makes pendants, earrings, and neck rings out of 14K gold filled and argentums sterling silver, and uses many different kinds of gem stones. She said, “I find it creative, challenging, and very rewarding to see the finished product.”

Located in Herrin, Paul Sanders is an accomplished gem-cutter, specializing in custom, one-of-a-kind cuts, on all types of color stones. Some of these designs have images visible inside the stone, such as a Butterfly and Black Widow Spider.

Lisa Smith is an ESL teacher in Carbondale District #95. Since high school, Lisa has been interested in jewelry making and finds it to be meditative, relaxing, and a way to tap into her creative side. The joy she feels in creating the pieces brings joy to others, and she says, “That's such an awesome connection!”

Diane Bremer will be showing pottery and will do a live demonstration of her paintings. Paul Johnson will be featuring his glass jewelry and will do live demonstrations of glass blowing. Al Morgan will show his jewelry made from natural materials such as shell and stone, as well as native-made Reservation items. Other exhibits include functional pottery by Rob Lorenz, fragrant soaps and lotions mixed by John and Ruth Lipe, quilted items by Lee Ann Grief, and glass-fused art and jewelry by Mary Patterson. A complete list of artists and their specialty is listed below.

Both wineries are big supporters of the arts, and regularly feature art exhibits. Kate Sensimeier, proprietor at StarView, said “We entertain guest from around the world and are thrilled when they discover that not only does the area produce world class wines, but the artists are of world class caliber too.” On permanent display at StarView Vineyards are mosaics by Janet Althoff, photography by Jurhee Veach, and copper and fused glass sculpture by Tom Horn. A photography exhibit at Rustle Hill Kevin Massiglia will feature recent photos of the local area.
