June 2009 Newsletter

Dear HeartlandArts.Net Subscribers,

Since our first show out at Blue Sky Vineyard last summer, we have been doing our best to stir up the art scene in southern Illinois. We brought you Shopping in the Hills, the Bleeding Hearts Photo Contest, Art Around the Square in Carbondale, and more. Along with the challenges we face such as the economic downturn and the crazy southern Illinois weather, we have also been dealing with some changes in our organization.

As you may have heard, Sue Mills of Art Lovers Trading Company, and a partner in HeartlandArts.Net, is taking a haitus from the Carbondale art scene in order to pursue other career opportunities. Art Lovers Trading Company, a long-time fixture on the Carbondale town square, has closed its doors. We wish Sue all the best in her new endavors!

Sue will not be giving up on the visual arts in the Heartland, and time will tell how her role will play out. In the meantime we at HeartlandArts.Net are circling our wagons and forging a path ahead. Please stay tuned to the website for the latest updates and announcements. In the meantime, here are some tips for summer art enjoyment.

Art on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail
Be sure to stay tuned to the Rustle Hill Winery events page, as they are regularly featuring an artist of the month, and also feature an event as part of the Southern Illinois Music Festival currently underway. Andrea LeBeau is currently on exhibit at Orlandini Vineyards. If you haven't been to the exhibit of Tom Horn, Jurhee Veach, and Janet Althoff at Starview Vineyards, give it a visit. And stay tuned for a new artist at Owl Creek Vineyard. That's probably not all but if you'd like more information about the wineries along the trail, visit the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail website.

Ste Genevieve Art Guild Fourth Fridays
If you have not yet experienced it, the Ste Genevieve Fourth Friday Art Walk is not to be missed. Click on the photo on the right for some images from the Craig Thomas exhibit at Studio de Michel in January. The next Fourth Friday is June 26. For an excellent calendar of events, visit the Ste Genevieve Art Guild Calendar.

First Friday with the Arts Free Shuttle Service Begins June 5
The Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum located on Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus and the Around Town arts group will sponsor a free First Friday Art Shuttle from 5:30-9:30 p.m. beginning June 5. The shuttle service will pick up and transport arts visitors every half hour to the following locations: Edward Bernard Gallery, Westray: Hosting the Cat Ranch Art Guild, Global Café, Garden Gallery, Gallery 1-2-5, The Artist Studio, Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, River Campus Art Gallery and the Crisp Museum. A schedule of pickup times will be available at the participating locations during First Friday festivities.

“Around Town” is a collective network of artists, studios and galleries promoting interest in the arts and public awareness of the presentation of fine artistic venues. “First Friday” is a partnering of studios and galleries in Cape Girardeau in an effort to provide the city with a monthly arts venue. Many local art galleries will have a show open on the first Friday of each month with local, regional and national artists displaying their artistic and diverse mediums. Several galleries provide light refreshments, and all visitors are encouraged to visit the studios and galleries during the monthly event.

Art Classes For Kids' Sake
A letter from the artist:
Dear Friends, I am writing this letter to inform you of an exciting educational opportunity this summer. There will be two art classes offered every Friday at the Dayemi Homeschool Collective, 218 N. Illinois Ave, starting June 19th and running through July 17th, for a total of 5 classes (see attached flyer).

One class will meet Fridays from 2:30-3:15. This class is for children from the ages of 6-11 and will be an opportunity for children to be exposed to art history and experiment with a variety of mediums as they create Monet inspired water lilies, fauvist landscapes, Romare Bearden collages, Georgia O’Keeffe flowers, and a self portrait.

These classes will be offered for $5.00 a session with an additional $15.00 material fee. The second class will be offered from 3:30-5:00. It is an intensive drawing class aimed at people ages 12-120 who want to improve their drawing skills. Attached you will find a detailed class outline.

I, Joshua Shearer, will be the instructor for these classes. I graduated from Easter Illinois University with a B. A. in Art Education in 2006. I have spent the last three years as an art teacher at Century School in Ulllin Illinois. There I have had around 250 students each year from the ages of 5-18. I am a strong believer in Disciplined Based Art Education, meaning all art lessons should teach Aesthetics (the philosophy of beauty), Art Criticism (the ability to discuss works of art), Art History, and Art Production. I have had three solo art shows post college; one is currently displayed at the Longbranch Coffeehouse in Carbondale Illinois.

Most importantly all funds raised through this class will support For Kids’ Sake, a fundraising project to support schools and orphanages in Bangladesh. Any questions feel free to contact me. To register for this class email forkidssake@dayemi.org or contact Shema at (618) 529-5044. Look forward to seeing you this summer.

Humbly yours,
Josh Shearer P. O. Box 272 Dongola, IL 62926 jshearer@century.pulski.k12.il.us (217) 549-0549

We wish you a lovely summertime of art! Please stay tuned to HeartlandArts.Net for more information. Also, don't forget to drop in at the Studio, the HeartlandArts.Net online community for artists.

Best wishes,
Amy, Sue and Lauren
